Exploring Downtown Kissimmee: Alligators & Antiques

Exploring downtown kissimmee

We admit we have been guilty in the past of believing that all Orlando and the surrounding areas have to offer are miles and miles of theme parks. We have always wanted to find out more about the area and have made a conscious effort in the past couple of years to do more exploring. One of those days led us to the Downtown Kissimmee area and while we are by no means experts, we wanted to share some of the sights of our recent trip to the area.

We began our day at Buchito Cuban coffee shop on Broadway Avenue where we enjoyed coffee, brunch and a friendly face before heading down towards Lakefront Park on the shores of Lake Tohopekaliga (Lake Toho for short!). On the way we passed the amazing Monument Of States, a fantastic photo opportunity if we have ever seen one! The Monument Of States is a 50 foot tall monument built of quartz, granite, fossils and pieces of buildings from every USA state. Truly a sight to behold!

Our exploration took us to the lakeside where we sat and enjoyed a break from the crowds until a fellow sightseer alerted us to the presence of an alligator on the banks of the lake! This was our first sighting of an alligator in its natural habitat (if you don't count a brief glimpse when we enjoyed an air-boat ride at Boggy Creek a couple of years ago!). We were all over the moon to be able to see and take pictures of the (rather large) alligator which was as a safe enough distance and down a steep enough bank for us to feel quite brave!

After the excitement of the alligator sighting we were ready to take a look at what the main street had to offer. Quite by chance we stumbled upon the unbelievable Lanier's Historic Downtown Marketplace. Lanier's is a huge antique store (18000 square feet we have heard!) packed to the rafters with antiques large and small including my personal favourite, lots and lots of incredibly cute tea cups! If you ever intend to open an English Tea Shop then you need to come here! You could literally spend all day wandering around this store finding hidden gems. We all agreed that it was worth the drive to Downtown Kissimmee just to explore Lanier's.

The main street also offers some cute and independent boutiques, music shops (Mr P enjoyed a look in those) and eateries. We also discovered a super cute book store tucked in a side street and enjoyed browsing the various nooks and crannies! We have heard that 3 Sisters Speakeasy on Broadway Ave is a great restaurant and we have it on our list of places to try in the near future. We also found the comically named Willy's Weiners which certainly raised some laughs!

We had such a fun day out in Downtown Kissimmee, when we visited it was super quiet and our day was relaxing and peaceful. A trip to Orlando is usually so hectic, fighting your way through the crowds and standing in line in busy theme parks it was lovely to take a breather, escape the masses and explore what Downtown Kissimmee has to offer.
