L-R GOSH, Milani, Barry M - Lip Oils |
Ever since Clarins launched their Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil (£18) we have been waiting patiently for the drugstore brands to launch their own, more affordable version and indeed they have! We picked up THREE drugstore lip oils to test and review from Milani, Barry M and GOSH.
The Products:
First to the table was Milani with their Milani Moisture Lock Oil Infused Lip Treatment. We picked two up when we were in the USA earlier this year and have been testing them out over the past few months. We went for Protecting Pomegranate and Nourishing Raspberry although there are actually 8 scents available (Milani products are now available in the UK and the Lip Oil is priced at £7.49).
While browsing our local Superdrug store this weekend we chanced upon another two drugstore brands who have recently launched their very own lip oil into their collection.
The first to catch our eye was Barry M who have been introducing some great products this year. There were two lip oils to chose from and we selected the shade (flavour?) Berry Good. The alternative was Coco Loco which has a coconut scent but didn't appeal to us as much as the fruity flavour. Both are £4.99 - excellent value for money!
The second lip oil we spotted in Superdrug is from GOSH Cosmetics. Simply named GOSH Lip Oil, the brand have actually have launched 4 different flavours - Rose, Raspberry, Honey and the very random Sea Buckthorn(!). The GOSH lip oils are priced at £7.49 each. We selected Raspberry as our favourite.

The Review:
Milani - The Milani Moisture Lock Oil Infused Treatment comes in a chubby container with what appears to be the worlds largest doe foot applicator! This makes application very quick and easy as it picks up a huge amount of products and saturates the lips in the nourishing oil. The scent is authentically fruity and does not overpower at all. The oil leaves a glossy look once applied and we found it to last a number of hours before we needed to re-apply. Milani state that 'All lip oils are formulated with the natural healing power of Jojoba, Avocado and Tsubaki Oil. As an added benefit, each shade is infused with different nutrient-dense oils that treat a specific concern'. The Milani Lip Oil was definitely a winner for us!
Barry M - Berry Good is another pleasantly scented, fruity oil. The applicator is once again, doe foot, but is a lot smaller than the Milani applicator. The packaging does look cheaper and more flimsy that the Milani packaging however in its defence it is £2.50 cheaper! Barry M's website describe the oils as such, 'condition lips instantly with these Lip Oils that moisturise even the roughest lips to create a smooth smile. Daily use of these non-sticky oils will leave lips feeling nourished and looking shiny and fuller. Berry Good acts as a double duty lip treatment as it hydrates lips whilst giving them a kiss of colour'. The oil was definitely hydrating and glossy and for £2.50 a great alternative to the higher end brands.
GOSH - The GOSH Raspberry Lip Oil is the same price as the Milani oil but again, the packaging feels a lot less substantial. GOSH state that they are 'infused with a blend of precious oils and a natural Nordic super active ingredients. Lip oils are the new beauty essential and provides that perfect glossy look combined with loads of beneficial ingredients. They add a hint of colour and much more hydration than a lip balm' Out of the three brands we tested GOSH had the most artificial scent. It was slightly off putting when on the lips as the scent was quite strong. Again, it was hydrating but unfortunately the strong scent put it at the bottom of our list.

The Verdict:
To summarise we would say that a Lip Oil is not a lip gloss or lipstick substitute. The ones we tried have very little pigmentation and serve best as a nourishing lip balm for no make up days. That being said, as a lip balm to moisturise chapped or dry lips they feel very comfortable to wear and leave a nice glossy look. They are great to pop on at home on days off or even to throw in your gym bag to keep your lips hydrated during a workout! Our number 1 pick of the three would be the Milani Moisture Lock Oil Infused Treatment. With its natural fruity sent and long lasting hydration it was a winner for us and we would definitely re-purchase!
Have you tried any of the drugstore lip oils? Are there any others that you can recommend?
Love Elle and Mimi x
