Wedding Flowers - DIY

When we started to plan my wedding at the start of 2015 I decided that I did not want fresh flowers. Having never been a huge fan of flowers I felt that it was a big expense for something that I did not really care about and we put the flowers on the back burner while we concentrated on other things.

As the summer came to an end and the December 29th wedding date drew closer we continued to discuss options for bouquets including silk flowers, paper flowers and a brooch bouquet. We had an idea to make a hand tied bouquet from silk flowers and include some hand made paper flowers from the pages of a favourite book. We started to search Pinterest and YouTube for some inspiration and tutorials that could help us bring our vision to life.

Now, its probably worth mentioning that neither of us had made a paper flower or indeed a bouquet in our lives before! However, we did not let that small detail deter us from the task in hand!! We visited our local Hobbycraft and The Range and started to gather some flowers that matched our colour scheme. We also picked up some ribbon, a glue gun, hessian fabric and some string and got to work.

We set aside a Sunday afternoon and I have to say, once we got started, it was surprisingly easy! As I met my husband while working in Orlando in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (and we both love the books & movies) we used one of the Harry Potter books to create some paper flowers to sit inside the bouquet. We wanted to include a nod to how we met without going 'over the top' with a theme and we were so pleased with how it turned out.

We were so happy with the brides bouquet that we also got to work creating bridesmaids bouquets. My Nanna put her creative skills to work making buttonholes for the bridal party too! We were so delighted with the final result!

It felt very special to have made the bouquets and buttonholes ourselves and we were very proud to have done so. The wedding guests loved them and the brides bouquet drew much admiration, especially the book page flowers!

If you are getting married we would definitely recommend giving this a try, especially if you are looking to save money on the florist bill! The total cost of all of the bouquets and button holes probably came to less that £150 in total. This saving gave us more of our budget to spend on other things that were more important to us on our wedding day.

Look out for more of our wedding hints and tips over the coming weeks!

Are you getting married? Are you planning any DIY decor or touches? We'd love to hear from you!
